churn dashing

We finished school last Friday! Yippee! Actually Zach still needs to finish his math book. We will start again the first week of September. So this week I've been working on my doll quilt swap 4 quilt. I like to get it done soon, because I have some other sewing to finish in the next couple of weeks. Not only do we not have school for a few weeks, but Billy is scheduled for hip replacement surgery on the 20th of this month. So I will be busy for awhile.

back to the quilt! I picked my fabric palette:

dqs4

picked a block out of my favorite quilt book (Collaborative Quiltmaking by Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran):

my two most favorite quilting books

tried out a block:

humble beginnings

tried again, this time trying not to sew so willy nilly:

second attempt

I have seven blocks done so far (I finished another after this pic):

dqs4

I wanted to have a 3 x 4 block layout, but I'm running out of background fabric. I pulled out some other greens, but I like the look of a continuous background fabric. So it will be a 3 x 3 layout instead. I'm not sure yet if I will add a simple border or not.

now who could this quilt be for? you?

I love those churn dashes! Jan Mullen has a similar look in her Cut Loose Quilts which of course she calls churn dashez. I did a quilt for a fundraiser doing those churn dashez and loved it!
